- January – Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia creates a military school at Holeta.
- 1 January – Italian colonies of Tripoli and Cyrenaica are joined together as Libya.
- 2 January – The trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, accused of the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., begins in Flemington, New Jersey. On February 13, Hauptmann is convicted and sentenced to death.
- 4 January – Dry Tortugas National Park is established.
- 7 January – Italian premier Benito Mussolini and French foreign minister Pierre Laval conclude agreement in which each power undertakes not to oppose the other’s colonial claims.
- 11 January – Amelia Earhart becomes the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California.

- March – Anastasios Papoulas leads a coup against the Greek government; however, the attempt fails and he is later captured and executed for treason.
- 2 March – King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) of Siam abdicates the throne. He is succeeded by his 9-year-old-nephew Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII).
- 2 March – Porky Pig makes his debut in Looney Tunes’s I Haven’t Got a Hat.
- 16 March – Adolf Hitler announces German rearmament in violation of the Versailles Treaty.
- 19 March – Riot breaks out in Harlem, NYC after a rumor which claims that police killed a shoplifter in the S. H. Kress & Co. department store circulates.

- 14 April – Dust Bowl: The great dust storm, made famous by Woody Guthrie in his “dust bowl ballads”. The hardest hit areas were in Eastern New Mexico and Colorado, and western Oklahoma.
- 16 April – Fibber McGee and Molly debuts on NBC Radio.
- 17 April – Sun Myung Moon claims to have a revelation from Jesus telling him to complete his mission from almost 2000 years ago.
- 29 April – The first edition of the Vuelta a España was raced and went on to become one the three Grand Tours of road bicycle racing.

- 2 September – Labor Day Hurricane of 1935: The strongest hurricane ever to strike the United States landfalls in the Upper Florida Keys as a Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds, killing 423.
- 8 September – Carl Weiss kills Huey Long, US Senator from Louisiana. He was nicknamed “Kingfish”, in the Louisiana capitol building in Baton Rouge.
- 13 September – Howard Hughes, flying the Hughes H-1 Racer, set the airspeed record of 352 mph (566 km/h).
- 15 September – Nuremberg Laws go into effect in Germany.
- 24 September – Earl Bascom and his brother Weldon Bascom produced the first night rodeo held outdoors under electric lights at Columbia, Mississippi

- 10 October – A tornado destroyed the 160 metre tall wooden radio tower in Langenberg, Germany. As a result of this catastrophe wooden radio towers are phased out.
- 12 October – Luciano Pavarotti is born in Modena, Italy.

- 5 November – Parker Brothers releases the board game Monopoly.
- 8 November – A dozen labor leaders come together to announce the creation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), an organization charged with pushing the cause for industrial unionism.
- 14 November In General Election in Britain, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin returned to office at the head of a National Government led by the Conservative Party with a large but reduced majority.
- 22 November – The China Clipper takes off from Alameda, California in an attempt to deliver the first airmail cargo across the Pacific Ocean (the aircraft later reached its destination, Manila, and delivered over 110,000 pieces of mail).
- 30 November – The 1935 British-made film Scrooge, the first all-talking film version of Charles Dickens classic, opens in the U.S. after its British release. Seymour Hicks plays Scrooge, a role he has played onstage hundreds of times. The film is criticized by some for not showing all of the ghosts physically, and quickly fades into obscurity. Widespread interest in it does not surface until the film is shown on television in the 1980s, in very shabby-looking prints. It is eventually restored on DVD, but the criticisms of it remain.
December
- 9 December – American newspaper editor Walter Liggett is killed in a gangland murder plot.
- 18 December – Samuel Hoare resigns as British foreign secretary; replaced by Anthony Eden. The socialist party of Sri Lanka, the Lanka Sama Samaja Party founded.
- 27 December – Mao Zedong issues the Wayaopao Manifesto: On Tactics Against Japanese Imperialism, calling for a National United Front against Japanese Invasion.
- 28 December – Pravda publishes a letter from Pavel Postyshev, who revives New Year tree tradition in the Soviet Union.
